Why You Should Forgive Yourself This Year
BY J.S. VON DACRE
It is easy to hold on to past things for longer than you should. How do you know when it is time to let go and what is the key to being able to move on?
The answer is forgiveness, and it is not often an easy process nor does it happen as quickly as you want. Forgiving someone else, in itself, could take even longer or perhaps may never happen. The first step is about learning to forgive yourself.
Forgive yourself for being in relationships with the wrong people
You took a gamble. The person may or may not have been who you thought or hoped they would be. It did not work out.
Consider yourself lucky. In years to come, it will serve as a blessing in disguise. You are free from the toxicity of being in such a relationship. The lesson you gained was realising your own worth and discovering love. Sometimes, you need to learn what love is by learning what love is not.
Your heart still beats. Smile. Breathe. All these things will continue, and be so much better now.
Forgive yourself for being friends with those who were not friends
The true face of friendship does not reveal itself until nights are the blackest. And in that darkness, you may have found yourself standing alone. Yet, as light dwindled in that place, you found yourself unearthing your own instinct and a strength that will become one of your greatest assets.
Forgive yourself for all your mistakes
For all the things you regret doing or not doing. For all the things you regret saying or not saying. For all the things you regret being or not being.
This year, find your deepest dreams and embrace that beauty of the wonderful unknown.
"Learn to forgive, and you will discover that the prisoner you set free is yourself." ~ J.S. von Dacre
