Why Being Afraid Is A Good Thing
BY J.S. VON DACRE
Someone once told me that it is only when you stop being afraid, that you should be worried. He said that being scared means you are striving for something more, and to not be scared means that you have lost that motivation.
Most fears exist in the future. You spend countless moments worrying about something that may or may not happen. And if it never happens, you have used all that time feeling anxious over nothing. When you look at it that way, so much time being stressed for a none-event seems pointless.
People tend to allow fear to govern the decisions they make in life. Whether it is in relationships, jobs, situations, or pursuing their dreams.
Fear is further fuelled by societal pressures. Because of this, people often find themselves living lives, that they do not necessarily want or are happy with, simply because they are programmed to believe that is how it should be.
For instance, many people have dreams of travelling the world. They say they will do it in a year or two or five. The truth is, most will not do it because the fear of leaving the security of a life (they probably may not even like) feels far less scary than the idea of wandering off to somewhere new.
Years will amount to decades and more responsibilities will arrive along the way–mortgage, partners, children. In the end, their dream never lives to see the light of day.
And those who do take those risks will discover people around them (conditioned by fear) saying how difficult or crazy their dream may be. Some may even say it is brave.
The truth is, there is nothing difficult, crazy or brave about following your dreams. The only thing that will be difficult, crazy or brave would be to not follow your dreams.
Consider all the things you wanted to do, but held yourself back from doing. In the end, was it worth the fear that kept you from doing it?
You are anything but weak, and the possibilities are endless. Learn to embrace your fear. You may discover it to be your best friend, and the driving force towards your greatest dreams and achievements.
