The Most Famous Engagement Rings IN hIstory
BY J.S. VON DACRE
"My mother says I didn’t open my eyes for eight days after I was born, but when I did, the first thing I saw was an engagement ring. I was hooked.” - Elizabeth Taylor
It’s that question that many women dream about hearing: “Will you marry me?”And then, comes that other question: “What does the ring look like?”
Today we look back on some of the most famous rings in history and the women who wore them.
In 1953, long before the White House days, a young John F. Kennedy proposed to Jacqueline Bouvier. There has been much speculation about how he proposed, but what we do know is that the baguette ring cost over a million dollars and was specially designed by Van Cleef & Arpels. It had a 2-carat diamond and a 2-carat emerald setting. Following the wedding, the ring was remounted with round and marquise cut diamonds of 2.12 carats.
Today, the ring is estimated to be worth around $1.39 million.
Napoleon and Josephine had both a passionate and troubled relationship. When he first proposed, he had very little money but spent a huge amount, nonetheless, on the ring. The gold ring consisted of a sapphire and diamond setting with the stones being a carat each.
In 2013, it was sold at an auction in France for almost a million dollars.
The love affair between Grace Kelly and Prince Rainer III has long fascinated the public after it was revealed that he proposed after just three days during a visit.
The ring in question is a breath-taking 10.47-carat emerald cut diamond and is valued today at $4.3 million. (Although he did, initially, propose with a much more understated ring).
Kate Middleton / Princess Diana
The 18-carat diamond and sapphire stone engagement ring was first owned by Princess Diana and bought by Prince Charles in 1981. The ring, itself, is perhaps one of the most recognisable, and it immediately started a fashion trend in the 1980s.
It again made headlines when Prince William opted to propose to Kate Middleton with his late mother’s ring. Its value is rumoured to be around $500,000, although it was initially purchased for $40,000.
